Cold water prevents both shrinking (as long as you don't then use dryer heat) and running of colors.
From my experience, cold may get clothes as clean-looking as warm does; but hot water does the best job.
Also, even though clothes look clean there is the germ factor, and the hotter the water the better when it comes to germs.

Yes. I have been doing it for yrs. Just check for spots.Use a spot remover...or some of the detergent you are using.rub it on the spot. For shrinking...read the label always on the garment, usually cold water won't shrink most clothing.

Cold water works great. i wash everything in cold (except for whites like socks and undershirts.) When I was a kid we would camp up in the Sierras and my grandmother would handwash certain items in the river snow melt. She said the clothes got cleaner in the ice cold water. Cold water helps prevent shrinking and color fading.

no it doesnt, but Tide makes a detergent called Cold Water and it helps kill bacteria just as much as it would if u used hot water. you should always dry your clothes in the dryer, especially underwear, if you use cold water to wash clothes, because that will most definitely kill the germs.

No damage really. But if you had some heavy stains maybe they wont come out. But that also depends on what detergent you use. I wash all my clothing with cold water, but my towels and bedsheets with hot water.
