I know it is illegal to sell copies of software, but is it illegal to give a copy to someone? Under what section is it covered in federal copyright law?

You'll have to look that up yourself. What I have always undeerstood of copy right law is that you can't make a copy and sell it. That's all it's so simple. Yet, the people who has the copy right is trying to scare you and I that we have no right to make extra copies. It's all about the talk of loosing money. But these people already are filthy rich, ripping us of with softwares that are full of flaws. To me they shouldn't even have to be worrying what we do with what we bought. How can you buy something that even you have the contract that you owned it (the receipt) and still it is own by the owner who produced it. That does not make any sense to me. I think we should blame it on our federal government for causing so much loop holes in the by-laws. Good enough, no?

Making a copy without permission is infringement of the copyright. Just because you did not realize a monetary gain does not make it legal.

you are allowed to make one backup copy for youself. Example: no one on Napster was selling their content for money and it's illegal.
