I have another question in Algebra I'm stuck on...question is
8w - 18 = 12w + 14..
I'm not sure how to solve it.
All I have right now is
8w - 18 = 12w + 14
-8w -8w
-------------------------
18 = 4w + 14
-14 -14
---------------------------
4 = 4w
I don't believe this is the way it should come out. I have to solve and say whether it is an Identy or if it has No Solution.
If you can help, please do. If you'd rather not give me the answer, don't and just use a similar equation to show me how to work it out. Thanks a lot.
Matt

Sorry that came out wrong...this is what I have so far.
8w - 18 = 12w + 14
-8w.......... -8w
-------------------------
18 = 4w + 14
-14..........-14
---------------------------
4 = 4w

Another equation of the same type is this one, and it comes out like this.
18x + 6 = 3 (6x + 1)
18x + 6 = 18x + 3
6 = 3 and it has No Solution.
That's why I think I have this other one wrong because it should come out as two numbers (i.e. 4 = 4) instead of having a W....what am I doing wrong?

update #2
8w-18 = 12w +14
+18 +18 add 18 on both sides
8w=12w + 32
-12w -12w subtract 12w on both sides
-4w=32 solve for w
/-4 /-4
w= -8

I know mad is hard this how I would solve it
8w - 18 = 12w + 14 equation
8w- 12w=14+18 u have to collect like terms i just moved the
12w to the other side which the sign
changed same thing with the 18
-4w=32
8w+(-12w) i subtract and 14+18 i added
-4w/-4=32/-4 now u divide -4w divided by -4 that will
cancel out just leave the w and 32 divided by -4
is -8 remember the rules of the sign
negative divided by negative=positive
positive divided by positive=positive
negative divided by positive=negative
positive divided by negative =negative
w= - 8 solution

Ok WOW people gave you some messed up answers. Being that I got a 100 in algebra 1 and 2, this is the answer you are looking for:
8w - 18 = 12w + 14
(-8w) (-8w)
-18 = 4w + 14
(-14) (-14)
-32 = 4w
(/4) (/4)
-8 = w

8w-18=12w+14
+18 +18
8w=12w+32
-8w -8w
0=4w+32
-32 -32
-32=4w
/4 /4
w= -8
and for the second one i got 3=0 which makes zero sense
and for the first one you should DEFINITELY get the variable in your answer

What you are doing is getting balled up on changing your signs when you transpose from one side of the equal sign to the other side. A common trap: The way you avoid that is by not taking any short cuts work the whole thing out. Always remember what you do on one side of the equal sign you have to do on the other side of the equal sign:
8w-18=12w+14 you want all your knowns on one side and your unknowns on the other side of the equal sign.
One step at a time:
8w-18 +18 =12w+14 +18 notice I added a +18 to both sides:
next step:
8w-18+18 which is going to come out to 8w +/- 0 so now we have
8w=12w+14+18
next step: is add 14+18 together:
8w=12w +14+18 which 14+18 is going to equal to: 32 so now
8w=12w+32
next step is get both 8w and 12w on the same side of the equal sign and 32 on the other side of the equal sign.
12w is a positive number so I am going to have to take the additive inverse of 12w which is -12w and add it to both sides of the equal sign.
8w-12w=12w+32-12w
Next step I collect terms by adding a substracting as signs dictate.
8w-12w is going to come out to a -4w correct: that gives us:
-4w=12w+32-12w I now word on the right side combining terms.
12w+32-12w first I rearrange terms to make it easier
12w-12w+32 now collect terms: 12w-12w comes out to 0 so
we now have:
-4w=32
Next step is to divide both sides by -4 to find out what "W" is:
-4w/-4 = 32/-4
Do the left side first: -4w/-4 is going to come out to "w" so we have:
w=32/-4 divide thirty two by -4 which comes out to -8
so your answer is:
w= -8

well, isolate the variables on one side.
8w-18=12w+14
8w-12w=14+18 when the term changes the side of the equation, it changes its sign
-4w=32
divide both sides by (-4)
w=32/4=8
w=8

your close =) don't forget that your 18 was actually a NEGATIVE 18...redo that addition (-18-14) now just divide by 4 so you get "w" by itself. w= 4/4 = ??
Good job!
