Skin is an organ. It is called Jack of all trades because it serves the function of protection, nutrition, respiration( in amphibians), excretion etc. It is made up of two germ layers: ectoderm and mesoderm. Ectoderm forms epidermis whose derivatives are sebaceous glands, sudorific glands, and hair. Dermis is formed by the mesoderm. So skin is a compound organ, as it is derived from two germ layers and that is why it is called ecto-mesodermal.
