I buy the real cartrages
depending on what you print. I buy new printers. I print a lot of BW things like word documents and puzzles from th net, So I buy cheap Lexmart printers. Like 22.00 from wal mart or Target...the cartrage is 23.95..so you do the math. If you are printing pics the get a Epson and a bulk Ink System, I use that for all my pics. Bulk ink systemis like 250.00 but the ink is cheap and the tanks are easy to fill.

It doesn't sound like filling is your problem!

You need to make sure you have a suitable cartridge BEFORE you fill it with ink:

First, make sure your printer recognizes the cartridge.

Next, refill the ink before you run it dry! I recommend refilling it at 1/2 to 1/4 full. If the cartridge runs dry--you will probably have to throw it away!

Assuming the printer recognizes the cartridge and you get streaking--you MAY be able to resuscitate the cartridge by soaking the print head in a bowl of warm water for 1/2 hour. Then blot (don't rub) the head on a tissue folded in quarters (or paper towel.) If you make progress, but still don't get a perfect color blot--add a splash of ammonia or window cleaner to the warm water and soak some more. Alcohol is NOT recommended for this! (Drinking some may help!) If you can not get satisfactory printing--throw it away!

I sell the refill kits for the 16 & 17 (also 26 and 27 color) with complete instructions on eBay! eMail me if you need more help!

My Dell A920 (same as Lexmark X1150) has been using refilled cartridges for years! Why spend $30 when you can refill for 25¢ ???
