It all depends on the situation and the person.

For instance, I have a friend who has spent the majority of her life in a wheelchair due to Muscular Dystrophy. Several years ago, she became so weak that although she could sit at a computer and type while talking on the phone, the very act of "getting ready" for work in an office setting became exhausting. Her company allowed her to work from home and provided the necessary equipment. This very reasonable accommodation allowed her to continue working, which would have become increasingly impossible. To this day, she still works from home, and the company has successfully retained a very solid veteran staff member.

On the other hand, the wrong type of person might fail miserably in a "home office" environment. Having been in leadership roles in business for over 20 years, I have seen employees with all levels of internal motivation. It is my personal opinion that there are many employees who require the structure of an office setting to help keep them focused on the job for which they are hired. For these types of employees, allowing them to work from home would be disastrous for both the employee as well as the employer.

The only viable answer to this question in today's world is:
It depends upon the situation and the person.

It depends. Some things are good and somethings are a scam. Trying checking them out on the web before chosing to use them. There are resorces you can use to ck them out. If nothing else talk to people or do a yahoo search. Don't get taken by scams. Good luck!!

A lot of people like to tele-commute. They can work from home in a comfortable environment. You can play whatever music you want, you can go to work in your underwear (but if you do that, please don't tell anyone..), you save on gas, you can do other stuff between tasks (whatever random little household chores you might have). Lotta upsides.
