why are ppl in the united states called americans when mexico and canada are a part of north america as well?

Well technically anybody that lives in any part of North or South America could call themselves Americans. But just about every other country has a name that translates easily into a name for the nationality. The US is the only country that has America in its name and it is the only part of the name that works for the nationality. United Statesians would be pretty awkward. Once residents of the USA started calling themselves Americans (before the war of independence) other peoples probably preferred to be known by their own country's names to avoid confusion.

It is a choice. We are not the only ones who refer to ourselves as Americans. People from Central and South America refer to themselves as Latin Americans and South Americans. We use it because our founders opted to name this republic "The United States of AMERICA." We say this so frequently, sometimes we do not analyze what we are saying and what we mean. Good question..It makes one think.

Let me explain one think. There aren't two American continents. There is only one continent called America. For location or regional reason it is common to group the countries, for example, Latin American, North America, South America, Ibero America (People who speaks spanish only), Americas.

The United States of America has decided to separate into two regions (continents), that's why education on U.S.A. consider two continents meanwhile Europe and other countries in America consider America as a single country.

There is no reason to think about two americas, if these is true, then we will have East Europe, Central Europe and West Europe continents, or North Africa and South Africa continents, etc.
