Once you have spoken to the petitioner in Mt Bur-Omisace, you need to head
south into the Paramina Rift. Enter the frozen brook area and you will find
that NPC from Rabanastre who is now willing to help you with the mark. He
will act as sort of a guest-esque character.
The Trickster is quite tricky to find. I'm not quite sure what the exact
qualifications are, but I just had to keep leaving and coming back until
eventually it was there. The Trickster is found in the Frozen Brook area, but
doesn't always appear. At one point I went south to the Karydine Glacier,
killed a bunch of enemies there and came back. Immediately upon arrival the
guest character said "The Trickster" has finally appeared (or something along
those lines).
Making it show up is only half the battle. The other half is the high
difficulty level of the fight. While the Trickster likes to attack with
powerful physical hits and the Choco-Comet (1000 - 1500 damage to everyone),
the worst aspect of the fight is that it is constantly running away.
Begin the battle by casting Dispel (if you have it) to remove the Protect
effect. Now pound it into the ground with all the physical attacks you have.
When it gets down to around 1/3 Hp it will use "White Wind" which makes it
immune to all status ailments. This is your cue to let loose the biggest
Quickening chain you can do.
The reason for this is as follows: around 1/4 HP the Trickster sets up a
permanent physical immunity shield. Not only that, all elemental magic will
heal the creature, except for one chosen element, which will periodically
change. This could potentially make it next to impossible for you to kill it
(which is why the Quickening chain is so important).
There is one final note however. If the Trickster does put up the immunity
shield, I found that the Scourge magic is always effective and does heavy
damage, without ever being absorbed. The downside is that this magic is only
available near the end of the game.

In FFX, the battles are random. So you'll be running around and then it'll randomly go into battle. Its kind of like pokemon. But later in the game theres a weapon that you can equip that has no encounters so you don't have to fight anymore random battles if you don't want to. In FFXII you can see the monsters right there, so if you don't want to battle them then you can avoid them or run away. However in both games there are monsters that you HAVE to fight to advance the storyline. FFX is less free roaming than FXII. FFX doesn't give much room for exploration and the path is pretty narrow. But the world in FFXII is HUGE so you can explore all you want and discover secret areas. FFX you cannot move the camera, it will just follow you around. FFXII you can move the camera all you want and zoom in and out and rotate, all that good stuff =). There are some sidequests in both games, but I think FFXII has more sidequests that you can do. It has a ton of optional hunts that take up a lot of time and there are so many secret areas to discover. So if you want to take a break from the plot you can do hunts or explore the vast world anytime you want. Theres not many places you can go in FFX if you don't want to follow the plot, unless you have the airship (which is near the end of the game). It just depends on which one is your personal preference. FFX is better if you're really into the storyline, but FFXII is better for the gameplay. FFXII is more complicated and there are more aspects to it. Some battles require strategic planning and such. I would recommend you start with FFX first because it would be easier for a Final Fantasy beginner.

I think FFX has random battles but they aren't random in FFXII, all the monsters are on-screen in FFXII and you can run towards them and attack or avoid them. There are some linear bits but as with most Final Fantasies once you've been somewhere you can usually return to it as well as exploring new areas and places you don't have to go to as part of the storyline. I think you can turn the camera in XII but I'm not too sure about X. Final Fantasies are never really linear. To complete the story in FFXII it takes about 35 hours, to complete all the side missions as well it's well over 100 hours. None of the Final Fantasies share storylines so it doesn't matter which one you pick but maybe go for X first. FFXII has a lot of audio dialogue and it may feel weird playing FFX afterwards because it has a lot less. Hope I helped.

RE:
Only for Final Fantasy XII players! I'm trying to find Trixter, one of Montblanc's Elite Marks. Help!?
The hunt is called "Paramina Run". It is in Paramina Rift, and Trixter is supposed to be in the Frozen Brook section. I know I'm in the right place, because Monid (who is supposed to help me with this hunt) is there waiting for me. Does Trixter randomly appear? Is there anything I can...
