The Gaza Strip is a narrow coastal strip of land along the Mediterranean Sea, in the Middle East. It takes its name from Gaza, its main city, and has about 1.4 million residents, all Palestinians, in an area of 360 km².
The Gaza Strip is not currently recognized internationally as part of any sovereign country. According to the international community the Gaza Strip is occupied by Israel; in particular, the United States government recognizes it as "Israeli-occupied with current status subject to the Israeli-Palestinian Interim Agreement - permanent status to be determined through further negotiation" [1]. The Israeli government disputes this, especially after the withdrawal of Israel and the liquidation of its settlements in the strip in 2005.

A long time ago (post WWII era) the arabs in the region(lebanon syria egypt and jordan) ganged up against israel. It was called the Six day war I believe. That's right, it took Israel that much time to beat back 4 militaries backed with soviet weaponry, and gain both the gaza strip and west bank. the arabs are still a little sore about loosing that one.
So yeah, Jordan Syria Eygypt and Lebanon pooled their resources in a high stakes gamble and lost.
