there are many beliefs on ghosts some which include (as you say) left behind spirits, some people also think that the earth and things like stone record the events of the past and replay them over time. some 'poltergeist' (or however it's spelt) activity can be explained by fluctuations in the earth's magnetic field.
There are lots of theories and quite a bit of research has been done but it is still a very Grey-area of 'science'.
