I just bought my down blanket brand new and it has a funny smell to it. I was told thats normal and the other blankets had the same thing going on when I unzipped them at the store. I tried tumbling in the dryer with a few dryer sheets but still has a weird smell to it. How do I get rid of that?

I worked in the drop-off laundry section of a laundry mat for 8 years. You can wash a down blanket in a front loading washing machine (hot or cold is up to you). Use arm and hammer soap, please use only a little bit, too much soap is worse than none. Use a great amount of softener, softener is a great invention, not only does it deodorize but it is a great stain repellent and static reducer. I prefer Downy in the the blue bottle with the blue cap. Now when you dry this thing it is going to literally take 3-4 hours to completely dry. I suggest using 2-3 tennis balls in the dryer with the blanket, use tape to keep dryer door closed. Dry none stop for 2 hours on high, then take the blanket out of the dryer and let it cool down for about 15-30 min. find the wettest spot and put this in the back of the dryer and dry on high for another hour and repeat cool down step and then dry on high for another 45 min or so. The stinky smell will fade as it dries (I promise). This works for any type of down excluding downs with covers that have silk or wool in them. Most do not, but I have seen some. Good Luck. If you need info on stains please let me know.

You may have to take it and have it dry cleaned before you use it. If you can machine wash it, take it to the laundromat and wash it with a good detergent made for down blankets and quilts. Put it in the largest machine they have. It sounds like the down was not cleaned very well before it was used in your quilt.

If all else fails return it. I have a down, and it doesn't smell. Are you sure somebody didn't return it after a steamy hot night?
Maybe the dry cleaners can help you.

I would try washing it on delicate and then drying it again with a dryer sheet.

YOU HAVE TO WASH IT FIRST THEN DRY IT FOR A LONG TIME & KEEP TAKING IT OUT OF DRYER & SHAKING IT OUT TO MAKE SURE IT DRYS EVENLY. IF SOME OF THE FEATHERS REMAIN WET IT WILL GIVE OFF A ROTTEN SMELL.I USE DOWNEY ON MINE & IT SMELLS GREAT AND FELLS SO SOFT & COZY.
