Badminton is widely believed to have originated in ancient Greece about 2000 years ago. From there it spread via the Indo-Greek kingdoms to Indian and then further east to China and Siam (now Thailand).[2]

In England since medieval times a children's game called Battledore and Shuttlecock was popular. Children would use paddles (Battledores) and work together to keep the Shuttlecock up in the air and prevent it from reaching the ground. It was popular enough to be a nuisance on the street of London in 1854 when the magazine Punch published a cartoon depicting it.

In the 1860s, British Army officers in Pune, India, began playing the game of Battledore and Shuttlecock, but they added a competitive element by including a net. As the city of Pune was formerly known as Poona, the game was known as Poona at that time.

About this same time, the Duke of Beaufort was entertaining soldiers at his estate called "Badminton House", where the soldiers played Poona. The Duke of Beaufort’s non-military guests began referring to the game as "the badminton game", and thus the game became known as "badminton".

In 1877, the first badminton club in the world, Bath Badminton Club,[3] transcribed the rules of badminton for the first time. However, in 1893, the Badminton Association of England published the first proper set of rules, similar to that of today, and officially launched badminton in a house called 'Dunbar' at 6 Waverley Grove, Portsmouth, England on September 13 of that year.[4] They also started the All England Open Badminton Championships, the first badminton competition in the world, in 1899.

The International Badminton Federation (IBF) was established in 1934 with Canada, Denmark, England, France, the Netherlands, Ireland, New Zealand, Scotland, and Wales as its founding members. India joined as an affiliate in 1936. The IBF now governs international badminton and develops the sport globally.[

Badminton is one of the oldest sports in the world. The researches of historians show, that the beginnings of the game are in the era of the emperor HUANGTI in China, approximately 2000 years B.C. The game, which had very little incomon with today's form of the game was named DI-DZIAN-DZI. They played it with their palms and a coin with two feathers as a ball. Even in 16. century, a little changed form of the game, named TI-JIANCI, was more popular thanfootball, in China. In 14. century women in Japan played a game OBIANE. As a ball they used fruit, equipped with colourful pheasant feathers. The rackets were wooden, and similar to today's rackets for table-tennis. On the backside of the racket was a picture of their loved-one, so they weren't allowed to play with that side of it. That shows they didn't know the backhand stroke. In Korea knew a game similar to the one today. They played it with feet.

Later, a badminton-like game has been developed in Mexico, where they used rubber with bird feathers as a ball. The racket was in the shape of horse shoe with strings made of leather straps.

In Europe a badminton-like game was first played on the French court. It is known, that the winner of the battle at Marigan, King Franz I. (1515-1547) loved to dedicate his time to the game first known as COQUANTIN, and later JEU VOLANT. In the beginning the shuttle was made of cork and chicken feathers. With time the requisites were developed. The ball was equipped with black and white feathers placed in terms, so it was more visible. In this phase of development, the game was named PICANDEU. It was played mostly by court ladies. They had to hit the shuttle as high as possible without leaving the spot, so they had to use the backgand stroke. The most famous "badminton player" from this feudal times was Swedish queen Christen.

The city Badminton in the Gloucestershire in England is the birthplace of badminton. On his estate the duke of Beaufort presented his guests the game POONA, which was played in the city Poona in India by English officers. On presentation the players were separated with a net, with which they gave the game a sport character. In the year 1887 the rules were settled and the game "from Badminton" started to spread very fast. In the 1877 the first badminton club in the world was already founded, named Bath Badminton club, and first rules for the game were composed. At first only the wealthier classes played it, mostly as a sociable game. The sport side of the game was less important, and more the fashion of the time. The clothes for the game were strictly defined. The men wore tail-coats and silk-hats, and the women hats of different colours, mantles and dresses with long trains.

In 1893 the first badminton association, Badminton Association of England, was founded. So badminton was finally admitted as a new sport, and the number of clubs was enlarged to 12. The first British championship, All England Championship, was played in 1899 in London, and it was finished in one day. Later this annual competition overgrew into a unofficial world championship for singles and doubles, and the best players of the world participate it. Even today, winning this championship is still almost as important as winning the Olympics or the World Championship.

At the end of 19. century the Irish Badminton Association was founded, and in 1902 the first German club, Der Bad Homburg Badminton Club. In 1903 first international dual between England and Ireland occoured. The Badminton Association of Scotland was founded in 1907, followed by Wales and other European countries.

5. 6. 1934, Badminton Associations of England, Denmark, France, Ireland, Canada, Netherlands, New Zeland, Scotland and Wales founded International Badminton Federation (IBF). It's first president became Sir George Thomas Bart.

In the season 1948/49 world men's team championship - Thomas cup (The International Badminton Championship Cup) was organised in Germany for the first time. It is played every 3 years (5 single and 4 double games), and the cup was presented by Sir George Thomas Bart.

In the season 1956/57 first women's team world cup, Uber Cup (The Ladies International Badminton Challenge Cup) took place for the first time. It is also played every 3 years (3 single and 4 double games). The cup was presented by Ms. Uber.
In 1967 European Badminton Union (EBU) was founded, which organised 1. European championship for mixed teams in 1968. The same year, badminton was presented as a possible olympic sport on Olympic games in Munich.

Since 1977 every two years world championships are organised, and since Olympic games in Barcelona in 1922, badminton is an olympic sport.
