You have a defrost problem. You say that you unplugged it and defrosted it but if you did not have it off for at least 24 hours with both doors wide open you were just wasting time as there is more frost on the coils in the freezer where you cannot see.

Since you do not provide the make and model I cannot be specific as to what you can do short of telling you to either call a repairman or defrost the unit as described above for a temporary fix.

Couple of folk here seem to have it right. A lot of fridges have the cooling coils in the freezer compartment, and rely on a fan and some ducts at the back of the freezer to 'push' the cold air into the main section of the fridge as required.

You might have blocked vents (clean the freezer - but don't disassemble it) and let it defrost for a 'good period'. You might have a failed fan (if it's working you might hear it 'start up' when you shut the fridge door - or press the contact that tells the fridge that the door is shut..). You might have a dud thermostat that is failing to register 'too warm', so the fan never gets the signal to start up (try adjusting it 'way up' and 'way down' and see if the fridge responds)

Fixing the last two (or bypassing them) is a job for an electrician. Having done it, all I can say is that doing amateur work on electrics in a fridge is just 'too spooky' (all that ice and water..), so just don't - your life is worth more than a fridge. If you have a friend who is an electrician you can ask him or her to bypass the thermostat, and then plug the whole fridge into one of those electric timers, set to go on ever hour for ten minutes or so. This method will keep you going for a couple of weeks.

Having the make and model might help some folk here help you more.

I actually had this same prob! In the back of the freezer there are square holes that let the cold air go down into the fridge, mine were all blocked up with ice so the freezer was nice and cold but the fridge gradually kept getting warmer. If not that try checking the seal on the doors- Hope it helps!

Check and see if the air vents are blocked (by stored food or other items) I had to disassemble the freezer section and clean out the coils inside a few times (do to ice building up on the coils and blocking air flow to the lower section of the refrigerator)plus there is a fan that circulates cold air check that but usually you are look at a repair bill or replacing it.(sorry)

Sorry you mught have to get professional help for that.It is quite easy actually for DIY but there will be risks involved so I might as well not tell how to do it or you end up burining your place if you try it. You didn;t mention where you stay so I can give you the service for free so either go for the repair shop or buy a new one.

If you think you could afford a repairman to come out and look at it , I think it may need to be gassed up again. But come to think of it you could almost buy a new refrig for what the repairman would charge. Maybe you could get a good used one for now.

You may have already checked this, but do you have small kids, if so check the thermostat on it. When one of my children were younger something had happened to mine also, come to find out she had adjusted the temp. I hope in your case it is as simple as that, if not I am sorry.

try pulling the cover off of the front of the fridge at the bottom. you will probably see that there is so much lent that the freon cant cool effectively this is the same thing that happens on your ac filters if you dont change or clean them.

there must be a control setting or thermostat that's bad.
