Hitler came to power at a time when Germany was defeated (from WWI), weak, vulnerable, in a depression, and looking for someone to blame for their troubles. The Jews became their primary scape goat, and Hitler became their sense of hope for the future.
Germany decided to take over the world, starting with Poland. The Soviet Union was initially an ally in Germany's quest, but then Germany attached them as well.
The US initially planned to stay out of the war, and that policy held for the first couple of years. We were dragged in when Japan invaded the US through their surprise attack on Pearl Harbor in Hawaii.
The rest is...well...history.

After world war I, Germany was a stagnant country. No income, no product, high poverty. During this time Adolf Hitler came to power, promising a change. One of the first things he did was to slowly (under the "watchful" eyes of France and Great Britain) build up his military might. A very compelling orator, he was able to garner support from the German people and indeed the rulers of other lands (most notably Italy and Japan). There are other factors which play into this as well, but it was precipitated long before the actual assault in Poland. All that did was begin the actual fighting of the war. Had the League of Nations had more teeth, it might have been able to prevent the military buildup before it became a worldwide issue.

WW2 began because of some stupid treaties we all signed at the end of the 1st...
When Germany invaded poland is started a chain of reaction from other nations that turned this into a world world war...
Poland had an alliance with Sweden, Sweden had an Alliance with france, france had an alliance with england and thats how the chain of events turned this into a world war... ((as a note, this was the master plan which would STOP us having another war after the 1st))
the threat of Hitler invading Poland from us, was because we knew that if he did, the chain reaction from it would start it all over again...
the other arguement is that it was just a continuation of the issues unresolved from the 1st world war... but thats a matter that has somes truths and some falsehoods.
The ignorence of some people is astonishing....
For a start NO ONE outside of Hitlers germany truly knew the scale of the extermination of the Jews he had in plan.... several reports and rumours were heard, but nothing concrete... so thats a stupid answer as to why the war started... and Britain DID NOT directly do to war because of Polands invasion... as i said above it will all due to a chain of events.
troothskr is also correct to a degree, the best way to build a shattered economy is to gear it towards war... as this provides jobs and money...
This is also evident in China and Russia during their communist revolutions.
Also Germany DID NOT plan for world domination... Hitler was not that stupid... What the plan was, was to have a combined Europe made up of Germans and English, as beleive it or not Hitler has a lot of respect for the english people and never wanted to war with us... his masterplan was to get the 2 nations interbreeding to get the best aerian qualities out of both the nations history and pride.

Hitler had a vision of a greater Germany taking over the rest of Europe. He annexed Austria and then invaded part of Czechoslovakia.
Britain protested and got a promise that Hitler would not invade Poland. When Hitler broke that promise, Britain declared war on Germany. France and Russia also fought against Germany. Italy and Spain sided with Germany. The German grouping was known as the Axis and the British grouping known as the Allies. Japan came in on the side of the Axis and after Pearl Harbor (Japanese attack on US base), the US joined in on the side of the Allies.
Although after the war, the horror of the Holocaust and Hitler's evil oppression of Jews, gays and others became known, this was not the reason for the war - it was all about territorial alliances.

Hitler saw the need to regenerate the German economy after the disastrous losses and concessions visited upon Germany after WW1. Conquest and subjigation of other nations, starting with the Sudetenland were a necessary adjunct to this policy. The notion of an 'ubermenschen' was merely a catalyst to drive the German people forward. His big mistakes were the attempted extermination of the jews and the war on two fronts against the allies and the Soviet Union. otherwise we might all be sprechen deutsch heute!
