In actuallity, Oriental is used to describe objects or geographic areas in the Orient East, not people in general. When you are asking about the people, you use Asian. It's not appropriate to use when you talk about Asian people, some Asian people take it as an offense (I've learned the hard way). And by orientialism, do you mean the culture?
