Tata's have been announcing common rail (DiCor) since August this year, but understandably that may take some time or may not be released at all because of a high price tag (which would compete with their new partner, Fiat). Recently I heard that a Direct Injection Turbo (Like the Skoda) is on the way. Direct Injection would be smoother and more efficient. Any ideas about when it will be launched?

Reports say that the Tata Nano diesel version could be priced at Rs 2 lakh, cheaper than the cheapest car in the Indian market, the Tata Indicab priced between Rs 3.06-3.3 lakh. We had initially reported that the diesel Tata Nano would be launched in July 2009. The diesel variant of the Tata Nano is likely to have the smallest Common Rail Turbocharged Diesel engine in the world. Several versions of the car will be released and margins will be spread over the versions. “By and large we have always been a diesel company and I assure that we will have a diesel version that will follow, if not the first variant soon there after.” said Mr Tata. Currently, 50 petrol Tata Nanos are being manufactured per day at the Pantnagar factory. The numbers will be ramped up when the Sanand facility, in Gujarat will be operational. The Nano diesel hatchback is likely to offer fuel consumption averages of up to 26 kmpl on highways and 22 kmpl on city drives. While the standard version will come without an AC, the deluxe version will have AC and would be priced a tad higher. RideSafe..
