While I would personally recommend using something smaller than a deer's leg bone, there is a very easy, practical way to do it. First off, use a sharp tool or rock to score down both sides of the bone, and simply crack it in two along the seams. From there, you can continue the process of splitting the bone into smaller sections, finally ending up with pieces that are roughly the size you desire. Obviously, this is best done when the bone is still wet, however, soaking it in water for a few hours will work equally as well.

Once you have the size of piece you desire, use either a relatively smooth, abrasive rock (or a whetstone) to wear away any rough spots, creating the definition and points you desire. As this is the same method you would use to create everything from needles to arrow heads, you should have absolutely no problems making yourself a fine set of toothpicks. ;)

if you really want a natural tooth pick find a road kill male coon. take the penis and scrape all the meat from the bone after drying ( the whole penis is a bone) it has a 90 degree bend at the small end. over all it's about 2 1/2 to 3 inches long . after scrapping the meat off the bone sharpen the end . this is waht the settlers used .most people who see's it will never know what it is

You can either take a good whittlin' knife & whittle a toothpick from the femur, or smash it with a rock / mallet and use one of the splinters.
