Santas have been all sorts of colors, and in different styles of suits. A cartoonist named Thomas Nast is generally credited with creation of the modern image of Santa Claus (as we know and love him) in the 1860s. Later, in 1885, a Boston printer named Louis Prang issued a Christmas card featuring a red-suited Santa. The chubby Santa with a red suit began to replace fur-dressed and multicolored Santas. Coca Cola was not even invented until May of 1886, and did not gain national popularity until the late 1880s. The Coca Cola Santa that we all know did not start until the 1930s.
