The possibility of black holes was first suggested in 1784 long before Einstein. After Einstein published General Relativity, Karl Schwarzschild used it to show that a black hole could exist and other scientists have developed the idea further.

the idea of total gravitational collapse that we also refer to as the formation of black holes was consolidated long after the theory of general relativity was proposed by Einstein. The famous discussion of Chandrashekhar and eddington is worth noting.Eddington refited the chandrasekhar's idea of total gravitational collapse.I myself dont know whether Einstein himself was aware of the existence of black holes when he gave the theory of General relativity. I could not find it written somewhere explicitly.
