I have my desktop PC connected to the internet through a Speedstream Ethernet USB Adapter 4200 router, using the USB port. So, the Ethernet port is free. I am looking at buying a Notebook PC and wish to share the internet connection. Will I be able to use the Ethernet connection and still have the other PC on the USB connection, or can only one or the other be used?

No - you can't. I think your talking about a modem, and not a router. Was it provided by your Internet Porvider? If so it's a modem and you cant use both connections. Even if you could, your ISP would charge you for hooking up an extra PC that way.

HOWEVER - What you can do -- is if one of the PC's has a network card and USB (the new laptop, should definitely have that) and its got windows XP, you can share the internet connection. Hook the modem to PC1 with USB -- then rightclick "my network places" click properties. You will see a list of networking devices on your PC -- right click the one that represent your modem hooked in with USB, and click properties. In the window that pops up, click the "advaced" tab. You will see a check box that says "share my internet connection" - click that and the wizard will lead you through setting that up.

Then use an ethernet cable to hook the PC's together, and viola. This way your ISP will also never know about the other computer, cause it only ever "see's" the first one.

When hooking the PCs together with ethernet cable -- it is important that it is a "crossover" cable and NOT a "patch" cable. The ether net cable that came with your modem is a "patch" cable so you cant use it. Most likely you will have to buy one.

(the other solution, is to buy an actualy router -- if your getting a new laptop -- it might be wise to buy a wireless router. If you use a router (modem hooks to router -- router hooks to PC's) your ISP will also never know that more than one PC has access.

If it is an actual router, then yes you can use both. Note -- if it is an actual router it will have more than on ethernet port. Virtually ALL consumer routers have 4 ethernet ports. Since you said "So, THE ethernet port is free...", is the reason I am thinking you mean a cable or DSL modem

Personally I would switch to a US Robotics wireless router so you do not have to have a cable to your laptop. I have read over the Siemens manual and its a bit confusing as to whether you can use both ports at once.
And with wireless you can be anywhere in the house and even outside.
