I know from first hand experience that they can be both educational and down right entertaining if instead of selling peanuts near the elephants, they sold live fully grown house cats ($3.50 would be fair) and as you walked around the zoo you could toss them to predators. My neighbors cat mistakenly crawled into my backpack one day just before we went to the zoo...and well he wanted out at what some might refer to as "an inappropriate moment".WE laughted so hard we drew a crowd,a good time was had by all(except for you know who).

I would pay serious money for a zoo like that. $3.50 seems kinda cheap. we'd rid the streets of stray cats doing a service to the community while at the same time teaching young students what "survival of the fittest" really means, first hand!

Several reasons:
1. The animals in the zoo still have wild instincts, and can become uncontrollable at any time.
2. PETA already has a hay day with how "cruel" zoos are ,they would go absolutely crazy if live pets were in zoos.
3. Eating live animals can sometimes be dangerous, animals raised in the zoo may not know how to properly swallow a live meal; and you probably don't want the little 4 year olds watching Simba choke to death on Timone.
Some zoos, such as the Denver zoo, where I work, do have interactive programs. There is a petting area with goats, overnight programs where guests can see screech owls and the like up close and personal, there is a wildlife show where hawks fly free over the audience, and there are certain times where guests can see, and sometimes touch, "animal ambassadors" such as skinks, snakes, and even cockroaches.
