When I had heavy bleeding I combined tampons and pads. I almost never had overflows. If you are going through more then one pad an hour you need to call your doctor asap. I would still call them within a few days to double check that they don't want you to try something else for the bleeding. Keep track of how often you change pads, how large the clots are, and how many days you bleed. The doctors will want to know that.

First of all, yes you should ask your doctor. When in doubt, ask the professional! Some people just have heavier periods than others. If you have issues with sudden heavy flow you could try wearing a tampon AND a pad. This way, you shouldn't feel any "rushing" because it's being absorbed by the tampon...and any accidental leakage will be caught by the pad. Double protection!

When you wear tampons, you are putting yourself at risk for Toxic Shock Syndrome. Since you are already having problems with your cycle, I would talk to the doctor about this first. I had the same problem and every time I'd use tampons I'd get sick very quickly and get naseous right away... Get the extra long pads with wings like "Always" has. You'll feel a little safer. It is wierd and uncomfortable feeling this, I know. When I exercise more during the month my periods are lighter. Also, if you smoke, your period gets heavier and it causes more cramping, so if you are smoking, this is just another reason to quit.

Try going to a different doctor. There is something not right. You may need a D&C. That may help, but call the doctor or see another one.
