judging by your yahoo name, you like van morrison, and should have been born in the 50s or 60s.
People like pigeon holes and fitting in with the crowd. If you dont fit with the stereotype for your age then you will stand out.
Wait until you are 30, average white male, and like hip hop. People will still be critical but you won't care.

You just gotta find those out there who like it too....there are plenty of people ages 20-25 who love classic rock--myself included! There's a reason why the only two ringtones on my new phone are Aerosmith's "Dream on" and "More than a Feeling" by Boston!!! I say, people who assume things like that don't have much of a life of their own. Humanity is all about contradictions, breaking barriers, etc, and just the second people think they have it all figured out, it all changes!!! Have fun and crank up the volume, and belt it even louder when people look at you funny--the joke's on them!

We live in a very stereotyped society, where you see someone doing something (or not doing something)...and assume others of that age group perform the same way.
However, some of it's true: college folks drink a lot, and are pretty apathetic about voting (just to name a few examples).

I don't know why they would assume that you liked a certain kind of music... I like all kinds of music (excluding rap and hard rock, thrash and the likes of those) and I'm 16!

I don't think that is a function of age as much as it is your appearance. I think if you're wearing really young hip babby clothes and a NY Yankee's jersey, yes, people may draw some conclusions, but your age is not much of an indicator to the genre of music you like.....

Please...i was listening to classic rock all throughout high school while my mother was headbanging to Metallica. The reason people assume is because of all those damn rags like "people".

People know I listen to metal because of my age. But speaking of music preferances and age, I am still surprised at how many positive reactions I get out of adults whenever I wear my Iron Maiden shirts!!! The love reliving their memories when they were my age when they see that I listen to them. Also at my last job one of the guys I mainly worked with listen to the same kind of music I do, Maiden, Megadeth, Ozzy, AC/DC, Van Halen, you name it. And he is in his 40s!!
