A router is a computer networking device that forwards data packets across a network toward their destinations, through a process known as routing.

In short, it splits up the internet connection and sends the right files to the right computer.

Routers are used when setting up a network so that more then one person can be on the internet at the same time. They are used in conjunction with your modem, and some routers are also modems. My internet service provider gave me a router/modem combo unit because I have two desktops and one laptop on the internet at the same time for different family members.

A router is used to split an internet connection.

Your ISP assignes you a number called an IP address. This number identifies you to the internet. The router takes this number and then assigns other ip addresses to every computer plugged into it dynamically. Then each computer is then connected to each other as part of a local network as well as to the internet.

To allow multiple computers to share an internet line, or to network up to 4 computers (more depending on the number of ports on the router). It can also be used as a stand-alone firewall even if you have just one computer.

a router is a network device, often a computer, but can be any machine with multiple network interfaces that reads each packet on each interface comparing the destination address of the packet to its internal routing instructions, often based on an internal routing table, and passes tcp traffic from one interface to the other if the next network is closer to the destination network.

Only router allows the user to bridge multiple computer to the modem to connect to the internet. If this router is wireless it will allow wireless computers to connect online as well. Switches/Hub will only connect multiple computer to one another but not to the modem.
