Less than 10% of the earth's oceans have been explored. There a millions, upon millions of unknown marine life swimming around the world. I think that it is a rather interesting thing to think about, after all, no one has ever seen a Giant Squid. The only evidence that we have that they exist is because of huge, tentacle markings around sperm whales. Also, Giant Squids were one believed to be a mythological creature

This is also something that Christopher Columbus said in his log:
"[A crewman] saw three mermaids, who rose very high from the sea, but they are not so beautiful as they are painted, though to some extent they have a human appearance about the face."

What? There are a lot of marine mammals. If you are a Marine Biologist, then you should know that whales and dolphins used to be land creatures and have evolved into marine creatures. I am not saying that mermaids could be fish, if there really are any type of aquatic ape like creatures, they would not have scales, but look more like a dolphin.

I have zero knowledge of the full contents of the earth's oceans, but i'm going to throw out my opinion here that while almost anything is possible, it is improbable that mermaids truly exist in the form we see them in fairy tales. They are represented as human formed/fish tailed beings, with human upper bodies, lungs, arms, etc...meaning they would be breathing air, not processing oxygen from water. In spite of the size of the oceans, mermaids leaping from the water to suck in some air would eventually be spotted, certainly at a frequency greater than once every 500 years.

The issue with mermaids is that they are supposed to be half fish and half human. Fish are fish, and humans are mammals. There are many differences internally and functionally. Reproduction for example, fish lay eggs and fertilize externally while mammals have live born which are nursed through mammary gland (ie breasts).
So, no mermaids, as they are fabled cannot exist. Though it is completely possible some form of life exists that resembles descriptions from sailor, but would either be an aquatic mammal or a fish.
P.S. Most accounts of mermaids are thought to be manatees.

that just looks like a halloween prop made from covering a plastic skeleton with spray-foam, then shaping it. sorry, but im a craftsmen and know how to make life-like props. the hair is dry, signifying it is synthetic, and the teeth and eyelids are crooked and appear glued on. There was no upper lip. also, why would it have died on a beach if it could crawl to the water? the tail is too angular and has sharp turns, which would not be characteristic of any other tail. also, why would it need a nose? they have to breathe water, and a nose is not very efficient at transporting water due to size and shape. why would the skin wrap so tightly to the ribs and spine? why is it such a dark, WOODY color? sorry, but this one is too faulty for me to believe it... as much as id love to say theyre real and attractive...

are you kidding haahah no but there is a rare medical condition where someones legs are born stuck together almost like that of a mermaid.
even the rarest of all sea creatures make its way to the surface once a blue moon like the giant squid.

I think they "did" exist once. But I try not to think about how they came into existance.
Perhaps a man and some kind of fish...........well, you get the picture.

Yes, I certainly think they can.
There are many things in the world which we can't make sense of, so we simply try to disprove its existence. Unfair of us, isn't it?
