Tank in filled through a valve called the ballcock. A float senses the water level in the tank and allows the ballcock valve to open and close. A small siphon tube comes off the ballcock valve and runs to the overflow tube. It helps refill the bowl during the tank filling process. The flush handle is connected to a valve called a flapper valve. The flapper valve covers an opening that connects directly to the toilet bowl. When the flapper valve is opened, most of the water ini the tank is allowed to flow into the bowl, effectively flushing the toilet. As the water level drops in the tank, the flapper will reach a point where it swings closed again and the ballcock valve will be open and start refilling the tank.

I have to correct all the wrong answers posted here. There are very very tiny men working around the clock to make your toilet work. When you push the flusher there are 3 people in your tank. Each has a specific job. 1 of them turns a valve to drain your toilet. 2 turns on the water valve to allow more water into the tank. And the 3rd guy tells the other 2 guys when to close the valves. You however will never see them because they are not so much invisable. They just hide really well.

The typical home toilet uses a bowl filled with water. When you flush the toilet, it starts a siphon that drains the bowl. Gravity then carries the water into the septic tank or the sewer system.
