First tip: don't bury the lede (lede is an old-fashioned spelling of "lead" and means the main part of the story). In the first paragraph, put they key information in there, and use the rest of the story to give details. Second tip: avoid big, fancy words. If you have a choice between two words that mean the same thing, and one of them is more common than the other word, that's the word you want. This is a big, big change from writing for any English class you've ever had, where they value you using an expanded vocabulary. The point of a newspaper article is not to show how many words you know, but to be read and understood. And third, don't have long paragraphs. Big paragraphs are a disincentive to the reader, and makes them want to read something else. Beyond that, follow the basics -- good grammar, spelling -- and you'll be OK.

writing in the newspaper can be a little difficult at times especially if the teacher asks you to omit all the 'overused' verbs like are is am was were etc. but the best way to get better is to get feedback from your teachers. try to be creative, have fun and stay organized
