now that can be a real problem! if i were in the same predicament, i wouldnt want to stay cooped. i would get out of the hotel, with or without money, and walk around in various directions each day. i will explore the area. perhaps, you could find a bookstore where you could browse around for free. there might be a mall somewhere where you can while away your time. that way, the day is not wasted for you.

All the previous suggestions are good. It's true, you need to explore your surroundings and see what your environment has to offer you. In most major cities around the world, there are many different (free) activities to participate in. For example, if you stumble onto a crew making a movie, they sometimes need extras. You may not make money, but you might be able to get a soda or a snack for your effort depending on what you did as an extra. Also, some museums are free, visit a local college's library and you might learn of a party, if you're a girl, you can crash it for free, if you're a dude, at least you'll know where the chicks hang out.

Take a pencil and some paper, cruise to the nearest park (i.e. Central Park in New York city) and try sketching or write a diary of the freaks you'll see there.

Lastly, go to the hotel desk and ask for their local maps (they should be free) and use it as your tour guide while you take a stroll around the city. You may not return to it in the future so why not visit it?

Take board games to play, or card games, or if you have one, take a laptop. You could also try out scrapbooking, in the motel, or a craft of some sort. Maybe you could make a travel folder, with a momento, such as a travel brochure from all the places you visit. Put a book together with the lot, including your feelings and what you do. It will be a great momento in years to come

Go window shopping, make note of things in the cities you're staying in. You see a restaurant you might want to eat at when you guys are back in that town and actually have money...jot it down. Think of these "boring" trips as preparation for when you're ready to travel for pleasure.

Get a job. You sound like a prisoner. Do you need help?
You might want to go home and find a more stable relationship.
If you can't afford anything, there is a problem.
