One of my students asked me why an apple is given to the teacher, rather than any other type of fruit and I realized that I had no idea. I can't seem to find anything about it on the internet. Anyone out there have a clue?

Hmmm...that's a good question....

If I had to guess, I would think it would have something to do with 'The Fruit of Knowledge', which is a biblical reference found in Genesis. Plus, giving apples to teachers seems like an American tradition. It may have something to do with that too.

But the bible never said that it was an apple....so I don't know how it became associated with the fruit of knowledge.

I would imagine that it originated during the great depression where people would give people they cared about gifts regularly but they6 couldnt afford proper gifts. (maybe)
