I work in the 3 year old room of a daycare. The teachers are having a little door decorating competition and we can't seem to come up with any ideas. Does anyone have anything cute to share? Someone is already doing the fireplace idea and we have decided against wrapping the door like a present. We do have a cute magazine article that shows you how to make a snowman with garbage bags but nothing to do with it. We have a big heavy door with a small window at the top and a large window next to it. There is a plug for lights but they can't be on the door (it won't be able to open) any ideas would be appreciated!!

Could you make the door look like a door to a gingerbread house? You could either have the kids make crafts that look like candy or actually stick real candy to the door.

Christmas Door Decoration Ideas

I too had a contest at work and came up with a gift bag. I took a piece of posterboard and put it on the bottom half of the door. Do not put it on very tight, leave room for a little flexibility. Then I attached the felt to the posterboard by using clear packing tape around the sides and bottom. I then took a few pages of newspaper and stuffed the back slightly so that it would stick out a little. I then took some empty boxes and wrapped them like a present and taped them to the door looking like they came out of the bag. After I did all that I put some colored tissue paper in the top of the bag sticking out like you would a regular gift bag. For the handle, I got some colored roping and hung a thumb tack at the center of the door and at the top left and right corner of the bag. I then just hung it around the thumb tacks and the ends down into the bag. I even taped some of the empty gifts I wrapped on the window as if there was not enough room in the bag. I even placed a small stuffed teddy bear in the corner of the bag. Sorry I don't have a picture that I can send.

You'll have to find a child a bit older who won't mind getting a bit messy but it will be worth it! Get a large piece of poster board and some green paint. Get a child around the age of 2nd or 3rd grade (unless you think your children will be able to do it, but at 3 years old...I doubt it.) Have them make hand prints starting with one at the top and then two underneath until you have an upside down triangle resembling a tree. Then you can have mittens made with contruction paper with the kid's names and teacher's names and put those on the tree with glitter and use different colors etc... You could get brown paint for the trunk and just do the same thing with the hand prints. Never done it before but it sounds cute. I used to decorate conveniece stores in NY near Buffalo and win for the state for Christmas. It was fun!

I actually just helped out a fellow worker with this one. Make a snowglobe.

Not too hard, just get at least two different kinds of wrapping paper, one, use a solid color for the base, and two, a silver one for the 'globe'.

Cut a circular shape out of the silver for the globe and a base (rectangular/trapezoid shape) for the base out of your solid.

Put whatever else you want 'inside' the globe for effect (we put a snowman and a Christmas tree) and add some snowflakes.

For the snowflakes, fold a plain piece of paper twice and draw a design on it. Don't draw your design along the folded edges. Cut out the design while still folded. If you had drawn the design covering the folded edges, your snowflakes will not be connected. Unfold your snowflake and decorate.

You could make the door look like a big present. Since you work at a day care, you could buy Elmo or Blues Clues wrapping paper and wrap it around your door and then put a big bow on it. We did this for hall decorating in our high school and it looked awesome.

Arrange Santa on the door so it looks like he is peeking out, or standing there welcoming you in for a tour. . Maybe put an elf peeking throught the window, and Santa on the door itself. Put the sleigh in the window, or maybe the Mrs.so it looks like she is waving him goodbye,or helping with the welcome. Do the toy work shop in the window.
Do snowflakes and icicles on the window and door. Do a snow person, surrounded by nature. Do winter wonderland.
I saw a tree on a Christmas card, standing in snow, and Cardinal birds were the ornaments. It was pretty. Another was a tree standing in a meadow, with lights and ornaments. It was done in foil.
Do a Victorian door, with a wreath hanging on it. {Can you put a nail in the door?}
A nutcracker soldier would be cute, human size, of course.
A sheet of music, with the words and notes to a popular song for older kids, or an office door..
Do a candy canes in foil, on a gold background. Or in paper.
Do Santas sack, with toys hanging out, or a Christmas stocking.
Do a gingerbread boy and girl. Or Raggedy Ann and Andy. Or a Teddy Bears' Christmas.
If all else fails, a Christmas card, with the kids names on it, Merry Christmas to every one at Little Tikes day care from Mrs. Smith's pre-kindergarden class. Cut their names from paper
Ok, out of ideas. Merry Christmas to you and your class.
