That "great balls of fire" song would be by Jerry Lee Lewis. Just go to a good Country music store and ask someone who looks to be older than forty and they will know. You also couldn't go wrong with a little Patsy Cline, George Jones, Tammy Wynette, Flat and Scruggs, Floyd Cramer, Charlier Rich, Roy Clark, Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash, Barbara Mandrell or Chet Atkins material.

Try looking on the Time-life website for some of their CD's, I believe they have a Country Classics CD, if he like "the great balls of fire song", he might also like Oldies singers like Percy Sledge (Sitting on the Dock of the Bay, Take Time To Know Her, When a Man Loves a Woman), Otis Redding (These Arms of Mine, Fa Fa Fa Fa, I've Been Loving You Too Long), & Al Green (I'm So Tired Of Being Alone, Love and Happiness, Let's Stay Together). He might also like some classic country artists like Conway Twitty (Goodbye Time, Happy Birthday Darlin), Loretta Lynn(Coal Miner's Daughter), Verne Gosnan(Old Violin), & George Jones (The Grand Tour, He Stopped Loving Her Today).

I agree with Joey that it depends on what era your grandpa grew up in...and I disagree with Betty, not all "old" people like Johnny Cash. My sons are 25 & 21 and love his music...they also love the Rat Pack as well!

I think if you could ask someone that knows his likes & dislikes, or maybe just get into a casual conversation with him about music. Once you get him started, I'll bet he'll go on & on about all the artists/songs he does like.

For example, I'm a grandma but of a newborn...my taste in music is all across the board. I love the blues, reggae, lowrider oldies, rock, etc. But there are others that are more specific in what they like...my grandma at 88 yrs old only listens to piano type music or anything by Liberace & Lawrence Welk (yeah, I know, you're probably saying who are they!?!?).

Good luck...I'm sure you're gramps will be happy for your consideration in such a thoughtful gift!

I'd get him classic country and/or gospel. The Great Balls of Fire Song is sung by Jerry Lee Lewis. I'd get him Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton, Hank Williams, Loretta Lynn, Merle Hagard .... just look for classic country CDs (or songs).

do you at least know what kind of music he likes? You can go from there, if he was born in the 40's 50's. You can research the songs in those years. Oh, Jerry Lee Lewis sings Great Balls of Fire, and mighty dang fine, if you ask me.........:-)
I'm 62, I love all the old Elvis songs, country, like Johnny Cash, rock, as in the Rolling Stones....best rock band ever!!
