I am looking into a computer for my father to use in his office. All he needs to be able to do is surf the web and send/receive e-mails, so he wants a basic setup. The computers I looked at have the option of pentium d or amd athlon processors. Which one is better and why?

It depends on which AMD model you're referring to. If you're referring to the Athlon 64 X2, then yes, that's the better choice...by far. However, if you're referring to a single core Athlon 64 (without the X2 designation) or the older Athlon XP, then the Pentium D is the better choice.

The reality is, however, that if all he is really going to do is surf the web and email, then he isn't going to notice the difference either way, no matter which one you choose. In that case, choose whichever is the least expensive.

AMDs have slower clock speeds than Intel, but they outperform Intel in most benchmarks. This means you can buy a slower(cheaper) processor from AMD than Intel. All my computers are AMD based because I can get a PC that performs better for less cost.
