Because linear thinking is easier than complex reasoning.
Traditionally, the Republicans are the party of big business, and the Democrats are the party of small ones.
Liberals are more likely to go for legislation that sounds good but has risks. Conservatives are more risk-averse. Both parties are well-known for legislation full of unforseen consequences. If you think Republican=conservative, think about privatizing social security.
For a time, the Republicans courted the Libertarian vote, but that seems to have gone out the window lately.
Most people these days equate civil rights with Democrats, but that is simply the result of JFK's "Southern Strategy" in his campaign, and a really good sales job since. An objective look would show this area flows back and forth.
And finally, one must remember that this is in flux. Northern liberals in the Republican party v. southern conservatives in the Democratic party was the norm for the war between the states.

I haven't called any Republicans conservatives. I detest it when people think labeling somebody based on a single issue. Just because a person is pro-life doesn't make them conservative. If a person is pro-choice it doesn't make them a liberal. It is stupid to think everything is black and white.

Democrats normally share a leftist view (liberal) and Republicans normally share a rightist view (conservative) and so that is what they are referred to. Of course you have the moderates as well.

They are poor categories. I prefer "leftist"...left and right. But Democrats and Republicans are just different shades of populist. Republicans a little less so, but not by much.
