but not exactly sure about my other options. I want to do research (who doesn't) with substance abuse culture alcoholism specifically... Just want to know if anyone else has different applications for a Soc degree.

People pursue all sorts of jobs with a sociology major. As you probably already know, it is great for lots of things.

Many people continue on to graduate school, various professional degrees. For example, it's great preparation for law school.

As you say, it's good preparation for research positions. You could look for research assistantship either at a university on a funded research project or perhaps a think tank (e.g. Urban Institute in DC). For health related issues like you mention, perhaps a health policy school coud offer some options.

People also pursue positions in industry with a degree of this type. For example, you could go into marketing. (But it doesn't sound like that's what's of interest to you per se.)

I have a BA in sociology and I went into higher education administration. This degree was good preparation for my graduation program.
