I was published by poetry.com and their book Timeless Voices. I heard they were a scam so I decided they got 10 bucks from me but that was all they were going to get. Well today I received my book and just as i have read from some other people on here my poem was on the first page. Now my question is am I obligated to pay the money I owe for the book or should I simply send the book back?

If you owe money on something -anything- of course you are obligated to pay!

Poetry.com is a business just like any other and even though they use unscrupulous tactics to get people to part with their cash, they still deliver the goods. True scams give you nothing in return.

Poetry.com is what is known as 'vanity press'. It means paying to see your own work in print (different from being 'published').

Whether you want to keep the book is up to you. Some folks like to see their work in print and don't care if it isn't a legit publication. Just do be aware that Poetry.com will keep your poem and use it in other publications without your consent!

Your work will always be copyrighted to you, so your name will always appear attached to the poem, but you will never get a cent out of Poetry.com or even be notified when they use your work in another book.

For future reference, YOU should be getting paid for your poetry or stories, not the other way around. If someone asks you to part with cash to print or publish something then run, don't walk!

Unless it feeds some ego you have, and want to show others that you can actually BE PUBLISHED, make a copy of the page and send the book back,,,unless the $10 is your lesson, to stop being involved with them.

Scam is a pretty harsh word to use for what they do, and offer. It is pretty obvious to most who read disclaimers and all the ad material they publish, they they are "Legit" but who defines that word?

If you are impassioned enough to WRITE,,,as I have been for more than 50 years, then I suggest you follow other paths to publishing, or enjoying the sharing of your passion with others.

Think of them kindly, at least for those who don't have the will, or patience to attempt other methods of getting published. That said however P.COM,,, has NEVER refused any submissions. They are in business to sell the BOOKS, and they do pretty well at that.

What sort of agreement did poetry.com get you to sign that would inspire you to send $10 in consideration of the privilege of being published in that no doubt venerable publication? Do they have an address in Nigeria, one wonders?
