The dr. noticed wax build-up in my 11 month old's ear today & diagnosed my son with what he believed was an ear infection. He used a device that looked like a curette- a long, skinny instrument. He used it in my son's ear to remove the wax & my son screamed for 5 minutes in pain from it. Is it possible that this instrument could have poked my son's ear drum when the dr. was trying to remove the wax or is the screaming out in pain a normal reaction from a baby when wax is removed?

If your baby isn't screaming or tugging at his ear now he is probably fine. It is scary for any child to have something unfamiliar and uncomfortable done to them. If your son has an ear infection it could be that it was painful due to inflammation as well as wax buildup. Keep an eye on the ear to make sure it doesn't turn bright red or have pus or blood oozing out of it. I would suggest washing out the inside of his ear with a warm washcloth to decrease wax buildup in the future.
Good Luck...my daughter used to have the same problem it is so hard to see them hurt!

Sounds like a normal response. Kids scream like crazy when restrained for an ear exam...and the pain from infection didn't help. It is very hard to see your baby go thru that, but is a normal behavior.

As a mother of 4 I can honestly say not a one of mine did not scream when their doctor looked in their ears. I'msure if his ear is infected it did hurt. They did however have to remove the wax so that the ear could drain. If you notuce any blood or if he seems to really be in pain I would contact his doctor w/ your concerns.. Good luck.
