No normally aspirated 305 can keep up with a 350. Unless the bird weighs over 500 lbs more than the monte.

rear axle ratio is a concern, from factory these cars got a horrible ratio,o such as with my 82 trans am in which is the crappy 2.73 axle ratio
go to www.thirdgen.org and go to tech pages, there are tables there for the 82-up firebirds that show engines and axle ratios that came in them
i plan on getting a 4th gen posi 3.42 or 3.73 axle for my 82
the 4th gen axles bolt into the 3rd gens
4th gen was 93-up
2nd was 82-92
if you need any info on these F body cars 82-up then lemme know
btw my 82 is a factory regular trans am WS7(trans am minus the disc rear)
poriginally a 5.0L and THM200c converted to TH350, and original 7.5" 2.73 open still, factory original power bulge hood, light blue metalic exterior and dark blue level three cloth interior, currently i am debating over what engine to put in it, either my 400 engine from my 77 pickup, or a 305 or 350 with milled 4416 58cc heads with 1.94 valves put in it and ported/gasket matched and an rv/towing camshaft for 5500 and lower RPM
what is yours like
good luck

Unless the 305 has extensive work (drop the deck, de-stroke, high compression, etc.) then it will not be able to compete. Good luck.
