Are you talking about a Monkey Puzzle Tree. I live in Washington State and work in a nursery. They are definitely available. Auracaria auracana is the botanical name. I know Monrovia Nursery has them, try googling . They are very sharp and not nice to get next to.

I've seen what we call a monkey tail tree. From a distance it looks a lot like some sort of a pine. But the leaves? are very sharp. I tried feeling one once. That's a mistake you never make a second time.

Yes, in fact when I was a child, my Mother had a Monkey tree made with chenille pipe cleaners and the monkeys were also made from theses pipe cleaners....I would love to see one again. Thanks for the memory!

Yes, I have one. What a nuisance in the fall with all those dried up monkeys all over the lawn!
