Capital Murder, First Degree Murder, Second Degree Murder, Voluntary Manslaughter, Involuntary Manslaughter.
Almost always in that order. In some states all Manslaughter's have the same sentencing guidelines. Also, some a states don't have "Capital Murder", but that usually means there's a possibility of a death penalty. If you are curious about "Felony Murder" it is merely committing murder during the comission of a Felony, and is the same as First Degree Murder OR Capital Murder, depending on the individual state's statute.

First degree gets the worst punishment, 2nd degree the second worst and manslaughter the least. With manslaughter the crime is that you killed someone and are at fault but you didn't mean to do it -- you were doing something stupid and as a result someone died.
Second degree is when you killed someone but you didn't necessarily set out to. It was intentional, but you didn't plan it ahead of time.
First degree is premeditated murder. You thought about it ahead of time and did it on purpose. Then there can be special circumstances that will result in more punishment, like laying in wait, which means you hid out someplace waiting for the person to show up so you could kill them. There are other special circumstances, but I can't think of them offhand.

1st degree is capital murder. Meaning that the state has to prove that the individual who committed the crime, planned to murder the victim. That is punishable by death or life in prision. 2nd degree, would be someone who killed someone during the moment, but was not planned. That is punishable up to life in most states. Manslaughter is causing a death by accident, yet it could have been avoided by say driving the speed limit or checking the dosage on a medication bottle before given out the meds. Manslaughter has up to 25 years in most states I believe.

1st Degree requires the "intent" to commit the act - commonly known as premeditation. It is considered the most heinous and is the most severely punished of the three you mentioned.
2nd Degree carries the the intent to commit the act, but there is no premeditation, therefore it carries a lesser penalty.
Manslaughter does not necessarily carry the intent to commit the act, but connotes the reckless disregard for human life. It is the lesser punished of the three.
The most severely punished murder is a Capitol Murder. This is a 1st Degree murder with "special circumstances" - killing an officer of the law, torture, murder of children, mass murder or assignation .... It is always punished by the death penalty (in states thay have the DP.)

First Degree Murder is considered pre meditated and carries Life or Death, u automatically get life if all the jurors cant agree on the Death Penatly, and u get Death if all the jurors and the Judge agrees on it. also no Parole, Probation, and suspension of Sentece
Second Degree i'm not really sure what the term but generally thats life automatically. no death penatly phase.
Manslaughter is like u did it but its an accident that normally carries a maximum sentence of 40yrs.

First degree murder is premeditated. That means it is a capital offense. If your state has the death penalty, that is what the convict will most likely get. I think that is the worst crime and the worst punishment.

1st degree usually gets the harshest punishment. It's usually distinguished by the act of planning to kill someone, then actually doing it.
