Congressman Vs Senator

A senator serves a 6 year term, a congressman a 2 year term. there are only 100 senators, 2 from each state. They are elected at large, meaning the entire state votes in the race. A congressman, on the other hand, represents a district based on population. there are 435 voting members in the House. The representation there is proportional to population, while all states are equal in terms of representation in the Senate.

Technically congressman can refer to a member of the U.S. Senate or the U.S. House of Representatives. Traditionally, however, members of the Senate are called senators, and members of the House are called congressmen/congresswoman (as opposed to representative).

Two senators represent each state for 6 year terms (one elected every three years) the theory being that they will think nationally, ie; see the big picture, when they vote on bills.

Members of the House are elected by local districts and each state has a different number based on population. The entire House is reelected every two years and each member represents a smaller part of the state. This is meant to keep them closer to the will of the people by making them answer frequently to a small group of people.

In reality most congressmen (of either house of congress) usually get reelected. The recent election was highly irregular in that there was such a large turnover.

1) a Senator IS " a congressman" 2) why do you feel only MEN can be in Congress? "congressMAN" 3) BOTH a Senator and a REPRESENTATIVE know enough to use the internet to find simple things like salaries for members of the US CONGRESS, I'm sure they get paid way more than folks too lazy to do their own research.

Well, I am a Canadian, but I understand your congressmen are elected pretty much according to population, while you have exactly two senators for each state. That is to have a balance between nationwide authority, and states authority.
So the congressmen are in the House of Representatives, and the Senators are in the Senate. The House of Representatives can propose laws but they have to be passed through the senate. I'll let someone else take it up from here, I am going beyond my depth! In fact I may already have goofed, but I don't think so.

Oh lots.

You have two senators and you get to vote for them both. They have staggered 6 year terms so every third year you don't get to vote for one.

The Senate is republican (small r) meaning that every state gets two regardless of how big or how many people live there.

Senators confirm (or in the Democrat controlled senate case, does not confirm) ambassadors cabinet members, judges and treaties.

You vote for only one congress man or woman. He or she runs every two years and in that chamber spending bills have to originate.

The House is the closest to the people. Or so is the theory.

Both have a re-elect rate of about 98 percent.

Each state has 2 Senators, regardless of population. There are 100 members of the Senate. They serve 6 year terms.
Each state has Congressmen (Representatives) proportional to its population. There are 435 Representatives. They serve 2 year terms.
