You know that they don't. And with all the ridiculous people on here actually asking that question in full seriousness, I would have thought the subject was over and done for.
Even if someone believes homosexuality is wrong and immoral, they have no right to punish someone. The ability to punish someone in a societal way comes from the government, and they do it only when someone has infringed upon the right of another, and through that, forefeited their own ability to go unpunished (for example- the government cannot execute people, except those who have murdered and hence given up their right to life by that action). What the government deems as wrong are all those things that an individual can do to infringe on another's individual rights, and homosexuality doesn't do that.
Hence society doesn't have the right!

Societies are creations of people for their protection and nurture. If you do not conform to the society, it is NOT the society's fault, but yours.
Your idea about what constitutes Basic Human rights is wrong. A Homosexual has the same right to marry as a Heterosexual. It is just that the Homosexual is not interested in marrying a person of the opposite gender.
Some of the things you say are rights are NOT rights. You do NOT have a RIGHT to a job, you must earn it.
I don't know if Homosexuals have any choice in the matter or not. There are good arguments on both sides of the question. Society does NOT punish Homosexuals as long as the Homosexual abides by the rules of the society. Staying in the closet, so to speak, will allow you to remain a part of normal society. If you want to flame around with your *****, then you have chosen to join a different society. It is unreasonable to expect the Heterosexual community to openly embrace Homosexual society. Ain't going to happen.
Personally, I pity you for either your choice or your instinct, which ever it is.

I agree with Ms. Pokeylope, the institute of marriage was created for a man and a woman. Homosexuals have every right to marry someone of the opposite sex as that is the nature of a marriage from the beginning. Why do homosexuals feel that the need to marry someone of the same sex anyway. I mean if your going to be gay, so be it. Loving someone else doesn't have anything to do with the institute of marriage. You don't need to be married to be committed.
The fact of the matter is that Homosexual marriage is a direct attack on the family as an institution! The idea that marriage can be redefined because some people choose to live a different lifestyle is, in my opinion, utter foolishness. Many foolish people argue that the definition of marriage is only a matter of semantics. If homosexuals are just wishing to gain benefits of marriage, laws can be created to define new terms to civil unions between different genders (or different creatures for that matter….hmmm… maybe I can adopt my dog as my son to get tax benefits.) So maybe there could be civil unions as a means of economic justice, however, that does not mean we should destroy what has always been defined as a union between a man and woman since God instituted that in the beginning through creation of the human race. One of the central things about marriage is that it's grounded in heterosexual intercourse; this is something that gay people can't redefine. People can call anything they want marriage, but humans aren't free to change the structure of reality. The true meaning of marriage must be protected from being change. It isn’t discrimination or attacks on homosexuality; it is about protecting what is important, “the natural family”. This is something that homosexual will never be able to achieve, a truly natural family.

Since when does society deny homosexuals the right to live, have a job or walk down the street holding hands?
Marriage is a religious rite. Are you religious?
And seriously... besides living and working... how are the rest "basic" human rights?

To those who say marriage was created as an institution for a man and woman:
Marriage wasn't created. It was defined. And anything that has been defined can be redefined. It is nothing but a high level abstraction with fringe benefits. Lesbians and gays already enjoy the reality that the concept "marriage" represents. All they are really asking for is the same fringe benefits you already enjoy. Now is that fair? Why should you have all those nice benefits and deny them to others? Greedy are we? Well face it, if you are lucky to live long enough you WILL see marriage redefined. And when that day comes you will be sharing all those fine fringe benefits. Get ready to spread the wealth around. This tale comes with a silver lining though. Once all this occurs, at least you will be finally free of all those restrictive shackles and confining straitjackets you've created for yourselves. Your minds will at last be free.

Oh, Matt. Dear, poor, little Matt. Homosexuality is not an 'instinct'. The state of being gay is like being born with blue eyes. Are your blue eyes an 'instinct'? Suspecting that you left your house-keys on the coffee table and you locked yourself out of your apartment is an instinct.
Marriage isn't a human right, either, because being single or unmarried does not put you in jeopardy of losing your life, does it? Gay marriage does NOT have to be ratified to save anybody's life, but it SHOULD be made legal out of sheer decent common courtesy. Gay marriage is not a human rights issue but one of legal equality.
Ten out of ten for spirit, though. Don't lose that revolutionary streak!

I truly believe in fact, I MUST believe that society is growing more enlightened. Despite the setbacks during the Bush theocracy we are moving towards a society of inclusion rather than exclusion.
Like any cultural change it is not without growing pains and I think that is what we are experiencing today.

some people just believe that homosexuals aren't creating a real family. i agree that its denying some human rights, but a lot of people think that the point of marraiges are to reproduce, and to have kids, but i think adopting is just fine.

no they dont. but they sure seemed to have pulled it off quite well haven't they? our only recourse is to keep living the way we do and educate. id rather be gay(actually i love being gay) than to be a miserable bigot. im living my life the way i want. granted its hindered by a very small few in a small amount.
society only punish those who accept there shame and quilt. fight to win, not to make noise.

of course not, but they do and will continue to. Its just like it was for black people, we just have to keep fighting it and sooner or later they will see that we deserve equal rights as much as anyone else.
