The big business interests found out that they made a lot of money and every year about this time their sales went up.
So some started to cater to Christmas shoppers and made even more money. Everything is about the money. People trying to keep up with their neighbors are made to feel that if their children don't get what the other kids get they are bad parents. So instead of spending time with them they work to jobs to buy them things. Until everyone believes that love means that you give me stuff. Kind of sad, but more domestic violence happens during the holidays, more drunken drivers and more child abuse.
Maybe it is not so good to do anymore.

I don't know, but all the businesses make butt-loads of money, so they really encourage it all. Maybe they are the ones that started it. I hate that Christmas isn't about Christ anymore! When stores (Walmart and others) decided to say 'Happy Holidays' so they don't offend the Kwanza, Hanukah, whatever people, I was furious! It is a christian holiday to celebrate the birth of Jesus, and they (whoever they are) took it away from us. It isn't a Holy day anymore. It's all about, "i want this for Christmas" and "oh, let's feel sorry for the kids that don't get presents!". I myself am guilty of losing sight of the true meaning of Christmas sometimes! That isn't even the answer to your question, but I was on a roll, and this subject really gets me going.

Society and parents,Society wants ppl to spend money & parents never tell the "true" meaning of Christmas. My great grandmother use to say "kids shouldn't get more than 3 gifts because they shouldn't get more than Jesus got."
