-x = 18

x= -18

Whoa! First of all 24 does not equal 6 and six does not equal 30 so 24=6=30 is wrong. 6+6=12 not 0.

The correct way to solve 6-x=24 would be:

6-x=24
-6 -6
________
-x=18

so x would equal -18

6--18=24
turns into
6+18=24 which is true.

Ask your teacher for additional help. It's really easy once you understand it. Sorry, I couldn't make the equation better while typing it here, it's just not possible.

Not quite. Let's go back to your first example.

6 - x = 24

In algebra, the goal is to isolate the variable (in this case, x), and do the same thing to both sides of the equation. After all, an equation, by definition, has both sides of it equal. Whatever you do to one side of the equation, you have to do to the other side.

For 6 - x = 24, what we're going to do is subtract both sides by 6. That is,

(6 - x) - 6 = 24 - 6

The reason why we did that is to get rid of the 6 on the left hand side.

6 - x - 6 = 24 - 6

Now, we can see that 6 - 6 = 0, eliminating the 6 on the left hand side.

0 - x = 24 - 6

0 does nothing to the equation and we can get rid of it. We can then calculate the right hand side.

-x = 18

Now, we eliminate the minus sign next to the x by adding x to both sides.

-x + x = 18 + x

-x + x is equal to zero.

0 = 18 + x

Now, we subtract 18 to both sides.

0 - 18 = 18 + x - 18

-18 = x

So x = -18

It is not because when you check it, you get 6 - 30 = 24 and that's not right.

6 - x = 24

-6 + 6 - x = -6 + 24

0 - x = 18

-x = 18

x = -18

No the correct way to do it is:

6-x= 24

(6-6)-x= 24- 6

-x= 18

x= -18

check:

6- (-18)= 24 --> this is correct

Nuh uh.

6 - x = 24

You want to isolate x on one side, so you have to get rid of the 6. To do so, subtract 6 from BOTH sides (to keep the equation balanced):

6 - x - 6 = 24 - 6

-x = 18

Now you want to know what x equals (not what negative x equals), so multiply BOTH sides by -1

-1 * -x = 18 * -1

x = -18

Check your answer, by plugging in your solution:

6 - (-18) = 24 <-- yup, it's right!
