Terrorism. Fighting against a uniformed military or government is always easier than a nameless, faceless cowardly ideology. Cold war leader knew that if a thermonuclear war occurred, they would be destroyed as well. Terrorist follow a leader who hides in the shadows and tells it's followers to kill and die for their cause. It's always harder to kill an enemy that lurks in the darkness,

Well, the Soviets as many nukes as we did and therefore our policy toward them was mutual annihalation, anyone make a move and the world goes BOOM!. Currently, terrorrists don't have nukes, but Iran is on the fast road to getting them some and North Korea could very well sell its nuclear secrets to them. As of right now, I believe the Soviets were more of a threat, however, that could change since, when fighting the soviets, we knew who our enemies were and were not fighting a guerilla war like terrorrism (although I suppose the Viet-Cong were guerillas, but they were contained in Vietnam and not a threat ot the US, unlike the terrorists).

Since Communism during the cold war is over and in the past i would have to say that terrorism is the biggest threat because it is right here and right now.

Not the popular answer. But we are own worst enemy. We inflated the threat of communism (and still do) and are now doing the same thing with terrorism.

And we're like the kid who never takes responsibility for his own actions. We think the whole world should adapt to us and never consider how our behavior on the world stage creates enemies throughout the world.

It's time we grew up...

Of course, Communists. They could have wiped the US off the map of the world. Terrorists can not do that. The psychological effect was greater during Cold War. People were afraid that everything around them could suddenly disappear.

Terrorists now. This is because they are already among us and we have no idea who they are. At least during the Cold War, we knew they had missiles pointed at us and we had missiles pointed at them. With terrorists, we simply don't know.

We knew how to target the communists, where they were. They knew we could easily target them with more reliable weapons.

Terrorist want to blow up your children in their schools and on their playgrounds. They hide behind their women and children. They are very difficult to target. That is why we need to kill them over there and let the collateral damage be their women and children instead of ours.

Neither is a bigger threat, because they both depend on a threat which only depends on the people to believe that it exists.
