they breathe through their skin, and if their skin dries up they can't breathe, thats why u see all the dead crispy worms on the sidewalk in the summertime

I'm no expert, but probably because their bodies require a great deal of moisture to function properly; therefore, they die if they dry up. Like the ones on the hot sidewalk after a heavy rain.

They do not have respiratory systems so the oxygen their cells need is directly diffused through their moist bodies by simple diffusion. The moist skin is essential.

They need water to live and they get it from the soil they live in. It soaks through their slimy skin.

They like it there, it is easy to wiggle around from place to place, just as long as there is not too much moisture.
