I have had a cold for a few days now and I think it is time to see a doc. My symptoms are sore, scratchy throat, stuffy, runny nose, sneezing, achy body and just recently a cough to kill...I sound like I'm hacking up a lung, LITERALLY! What kind of meds do you think a doctor will prescribe me for such symptoms? Answers from actual doctors would be nice but any answer is much appreciated.

Depends. If it just a cold, you will likely get some prescription cough syrup and told to take Tylenol. Tussionex is commonly prescribed, as is Phenergan with Codeine (if the coughing is enough to keep you from resting). If the symptoms are more flu-like, you may still get the above, but most physicians prefer to let it run it's course. Antibiotics are not effective in treating the common cold or flu. However, if it turns to bronchitis or pneumonia, then an antibiotic would be indicated.

Sounds like you probably have sinusitis and bronchitis.
You will probably get an antibiotic like Omnicef or Augmentin.
You might get some kind of antihistimine to help the head thing and or you could get some kind of expectorant to help break up the junk in your lungs and help you cough it up.
Generally if I feel the symptoms coming on I drink Thera Flu and take some Tussin DM then I go to bed and sleep in some really good bedding that keeps me more than just warm.
Some time in the middle of the night I get too hot and IF I can make myself keep the covers on I sweat it out and end up breaking my fever and I start feeling better.
Sometimes I have to take the Tussin DM for a few days but eventually I get well without going to the Dr.
You just got a good case of the crud and it's going around what with all of the whacky weather that most of the US has been having lately.

If you have a cold then you should not be getting prescribed any antibiotics or anything like that. Over the counter medications can help with your symptoms while the cold (if that is what it is) takes its course. If it does not seem to be getting better or gets worse after a week or 2 then you may want to go see your doc.

Well I cannot tell you the exact medications by name, but most likely he/she would prescribe an antibiotic, an antihistamine/decongestant for the stuffy, running nose, and sneezing. Tylenol or advil for the achy body and an antitussive for the cough. But that all depends on what the doctor that evaluates you finds. Hope that helps. Get well soon.
