The recommendation for castor oil is 2fl oz. I tried it and it didn't work for me. It was also EXTREMELY disgusting and I kept burping up the oil for hours. I was afraid that it was going to come out the wrong end! I wouldn't recommend it. Try nipple stimulation on and off for about 20 minutes at a time coupled with sex (with sperm) or Red Raspberry Leaf tea. The nipple stimulation and female orgasm provides natural oxytocin and the red raspberry provides natural and safe prostaglandins. The combination of both natural chemicals are known to cause imminent labor.
Black Cohosh is supposed to work but it has been known to cause increased fetal heart rate and many other problems. I wouldn't do it.

Cator oil is not recommended to start labor. What it does is give you diarrhea, which is never pleasant and even worse when you are very pregnant. It will not harm the baby, but you may get dehydrated which is likely to start contractions. However, when you get to the hospital, they'll see you are dehydrated, they will put an IV in you to rehydrate you and the contractions will probably stop unless you are ready to go into labor anyway. If that is the case, you don't need to take anything in the first place. You can NOT start your labor any earlier than your baby and your body are ready to. I have had 4 babies. All were born past 40 weeks and I tried many things, walking, sex, eating spicy food, driving down bumpy roads, scrubbing floors on my hands and knees. Nothing worked. Some women swear by one method or another but the truth is, labor would have started regardless of what you did. You are only 37 weeks - give your baby and your body the time it needs to go into labor when it is time.

I've tried the castor oil. It didn't work to induce my labor (that I'm aware of) but it sure did what it was designed to do. If you're worried about crapping the bed in labor you won't have to worry about it after castor oil.
Black cohosh is some serious stuff, I wouldn't advise it.
Be patient, try to avoid pitocin (if you're going for a natural birth) because your contractions will be one after the other with no rest period.

I've read that castor oil just gives you really bad stomach pains. (not contractions)..most women mistake the stomach pains for contractions.
I've also read that sex is more likely to spark contractions more than any other method. There's some explaination comparing the muscles that spasm during sex and the ones that contract during labor. (in a healthy pregnancy, it also makes labor easier and quicker)
Walking is a good way. (it makes you feel cruddy when your as far along as you, but would sure beat the icky feeling that castor oil will give you!)
Please think about it before you take castor oil or any thing else. What if it makes you sick? If you feel yucky, your baby can tell.
God bless you and your new little one!:)

I have never taken castor oil, I have 3 kids, but believe me even if I was overdue I wouldn't try it. I have heard major horror stories about the diarrhea you will have and possible back labor you could wind up in. Check it out on ivillage.com Also I know how aggrivating waiting is, but try to stick it out til your baby is ready to come. The baby is supposed to come at 40 weeks for a reason. The longer your baby waits to meet the world, the healthier s/he will be. I had my last baby at 36 weeks and he really has a hard time. My 1st baby was born at 41 weeks and is the healthiest child I have ever seen. Good Luck! Try to be patient.

i've heard nothign but horror stories from castor oil.. if you want to be sitting on the toilet all night, then go for it. black cohosh is simply NOT SAFE. i dont recommend that at all.
Edited to add : trying to induce labor when your body is NOT physically ready for it is not a good idea either.. and it wont work. and pgcy is 40 weeks for a REASON. you should really cook that baby as long as nature allows.

Dont take anything, this could interfere with labor pains or make them worser.
Let nature take its course and come naturally.
