They actually don't do that anymore. Now they just massage the baby quickly when it's born.

Of course not, and thus (thank goodness) is mostly no longer in practice in hospitals. An aspirator clears the lungs and throat of a baby. Spanking does not give them breath. Can you imagine how frightening it must be to enter the world from the dark soothing warmth of the womb and be hit for it? What a shameful practice!

Sometimes a baby is not responding well when they come out of their mother, the spank helps wake up nerves and also helps in allowing the amniotic fluid to come out of the baby's throat and lungs. I was born with no breath and no heart beat, the doctors did everything they could think of to get me to show some sign of life, then they pinched me on my upper thigh and it awoke me. Brought me back, I am now 26 years old and I thank the doctors for doing whatever they had to do. A spank a pinch, whatever... it gave me a second chance.

They didn't spank any of my 3 kids at birth, they just sucked out their noses and mouths with an aspirator!! A spank on those tiny little fragile bums would hurt!!!

I have 4 children and none of them were slapped at birth.

OK genius---evidently you are not a parent. They do NOT slap babies when they are born...that is only in the movies. And it was done years and years ago ,if ever.

My daughter was not slapped when she was born. I can't imagine any medical professional doing that.

My g/f wasn't spanked when she was born - but I've been doing my best to make up for the omission....

Turn on one of those medical channels - they suction out the baby with the bulb thingie.

They dont do that anymore. They clear the babies throat and lungs with the bulb syringe , etc...Ive never seen them do that to one of my babys.....I have had 3
