(I also posted this under Languages---sorry) I was an exchange student in Japan. I found out that the teacher whose class I was visiting just had his mother die. I'm supposed to send him a card in Japanese, but I don't know what to write.
Can anyone help me?

I have been studying Japanese since I was 6. I can handle the kanji by myself with sufficient accuracy. If someone could give me traditional expressions in romanji, I would be very grateful.

gosonbosama no goseikyo o itami, kokoro kara okuyami mousiagemasu. In Japanese, ご尊母様のご逝去を悼み心からお悔やみ申し上げます。 This is very formal expression. I think it's better to add some personal touch like, " I am afraid there is nothing I can do for you on this sad situation but I do pray for her peaceful departure" etc (well, this sounds formal too, sorry).

Person above me has it down perfectly.
But, even though I'm Japanese by nationality, the American "I'm sorry for your loss" hits home for me alot more than the Japanese way of saying it.
