expectations. Too many people have really high expectations that "moving to America will make everything better". Well, there's competition for jobs, there's lonliness in no longer feeling "comfotable" that everyone around you is the same. Like if you are from Greece, you feel comfortable among the Greeks in Greece. But if you find yourself in Bangor Maine, it takes a long time to feel really comfortable...because people "like you"...aren't all around. I'm from CT

I'm American, but spent so long in Japan that when I came home, I had culture shock. I even had to get used to understanding English again.

American English seemed very fast to me, and it took two weeks for me to be able to truly understand everybody.

I noticed that the grocery stores had far more variety than I was used to, and saw things sold in greater bulk (milk by the gallon, instead of the pint, for example).

There seemed to be a hell of a lot more space everywhere, from the streets to the interiors of homes.

I re-discovered how to use and maintain a checking account, and had to buy a car.

BUT...all in all, I found life better here in almost every way.

I don't know if I can be any help to you, but I have a soft spot for foreigners. Drop me a line (e-mail me) if I can help you with anything.

Im American, so I dont really know, but I have known many foreigners and I found these out: 1. Chinese friend did not get how or why Americans are so sociable. He thought most of it was inaproppriate. 2. Mexican friend didnt understand why were are not as family oriented 3. Friend from Canada thought Americans are blunt to the point of rudeness. I think it would be hard to get used to our use of english...we kind of do with it what we want.

i was born in the states. my mom came from cape verde, west africa and she said the hardest part was leaving her mom and sister behind.

my mom was in her mid 30's and when she came there were no translaters, and she had 6 kids, my father was around too. so it was like she had to start from scratch.
